When the American artist Jeanne Rewa was a child, horses were pure magnetism. Irresistible. She wanted to spend every minute of her time and every ounce of her attention and energy on them.
The time Jeanne spent connecting with horses as a child was about so much more than riding - riding was certainly the thing she got to spend the least time with! In this art piece about the relationship between children and horses, the young artist wanted to express that insatiable energy and fascination and the physicality of that relationship.
In the painting by Justus Sustermans that inspired this piece, a child sits still on top of a pony which he restrains with a curb bit. And in her digital artwork, she used transparent layers to show one child not only riding, but also energetically interacting in many ways with one patient and still (and unrestrained) horse: feeding it, drawing it, hugging it, resting on it, caring for its hooves, brushing it, braiding its tail, daydreaming next to it.
Jeanne chose to use a pencil sketch style because of how much time she spent drawing horses with a regular pencil when she was a child. The bright colors represent the coloring she did as a child in her horse coloring books when she was not drawing them with a pencil.

Something about Jeanne Rewa and her equine art
Since early childhood, Jeanne Rewa has explored and expressed her love for horses through art. She is a mostly self-taught artist.
Jeanne likes to experiment with various and mixed media depending on her mood and her subject, including pen and ink, graphite, watercolor, digital art, linocut, and more. While living in China from 2004 to 2006, Jeanne began studying Chinese brush painting. After years of study and practice, this has become one of her primary mediums.
No matter what medium she is using, Jeanne’s artwork is heavily influenced by her study of traditional Chinese brush painting techniques and philosophy.
She aims to express the essential elements of her subject (feeling, motion, shape) through the use of strong gestures and minimizing details. While Jeanne’s primary subject is horses, she occasionally portrays non-horse subjects.
Her works have been sold around the world and have been shown and won awards at local and regional exhibitions.
